Trevor Sinclair is a graduate of the FA's school of excellence, after which he went to Blackpool. He soon developed a reputation as one of English football's brightest young stars, and then Manchester City boss Peter Reid tried to sign him for £200,000 but was turned down by his chairman Peter Swailes.
In 1993, he moved to Premier League Queens Park Rangers for £750,000, despite interest from West Ham United. He was a big hit at QPR and scored some spectacular goals. When they were relegated from the top flight, he stayed with them until midway through the 1997/98 season, when he joined West Ham for three times what they had originally hoped to sign him for five years earlier.
However, with seven goals in his first 14 games that season, he was clearly a success and continued to be for the next few years. In 2001, he put in a transfer request, hoping to move to a bigger club, but later withdrew it.
He made his England debut in November of that year, against Sweden, and has continued to push for a more regular place in the team, making it to the 2002 World Cup finals. Since then, Sinclair has made just three appearances for England, and didn't feature at all during the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign and failed to make the squad for the actual tournament.
When West Ham were relegated at the end of the 2002/03, he was one of the most likely departees and when his boyhood team Manchester City came calling, he had no hesitation in signing up and making a quick return to the top flight for £2.5million.
Although Sinclair started his City career well - he scored on his debut for City, in the UEFA Cup clash with TNS, he went on to have an indifferent season. By his own admission he struggled to find the kind of form that had previously earned him a place in the England squad. He ended up spending the majority of the 2003/04 campaign on the bench.
This trend continued into the 2004/05 campaign as a knee injury in November ended his season. He played only 5 games, but did score once - in City's 4-0 home win against Charlton. Sinclair had marginally better luck in 2005/06, as although he did suffer from injuries, he managed over 30 appearances.
